Getting Started

There are two parts to the HSA concept. Before a health savings account can be opened, a qualified High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) must be in place to cover the individual or family. An HDHP provides health coverage for an individual or family with an affordable premium. The guidelines for an HDHP are determined by the Internal Revenue Service each year. To determine if your plan qualifies, please contact your health plan representative. We can help you find insurance companies and insurance agents that will be able to help you obtain your HDHP.

Enroll in an HSA with Community State Bank by completing the enrollment application and other necessary forms at any one of our convenient locations.

Once your account is established, you will receive all of the necessary information and your checks/debit card(s) if you ordered them. HSAs were developed to give you control of your health care and health care dollars. To use your HSA, you can write out checks or have your debit card swiped for immediate disbursements for eligible medical expenses.

If you contribute money to your HSA, you are able to deduct your contributions from your gross income when filing your federal income taxes.

**It is in your best interest to seek the guidance of a tax or legal professional before opening an HSA. For more information, refer to IRC Section 223 and all additional IRS guidance, IRS publications that include information about HSAs, instructions to your federal income tax return, your local IRS office, or the IRS's website at http://www.irs.gov.
